V2 at Hoffmann’s 19th December 1944

The following is an excerpt from an Air Raid Wardens report “A V2 fell at 1.30am on Hoffmann’s & Henry Rd, 40 people killed (29 worked at Hoffmanns’) 115 injured, 1 large shop wrecked, 1 seriously damaged, general damage to Hoffmann’s, minor damage to marconi’s, severe damage to Rectory Rd & Henry Rd 5 houses demolished, 25 seriously damaged, 403 minor damage.”

To Perpetuate those who lost their lives

This piece is from the unpublished manuscript titled “The story of Hoffmanns-Chelmsford 1898-1969” by M.H.Cobbold, Publicity Manager 1960-1969. This manuscript is held at the Essex Public Records Office in Chelmsford.

“To perpetuate those who lost their lives at the Chelmsford works a plaque, in the form of a symbolic Roller Bearing, was designed by a member of the Personnel Department, fabricated by The Tool Room & The Machine Tool Room Maintenance Department in Stainless steel supplied by the Hoffmann parent company Brown Bayley’s and mounted upon a base contributed by The Carpenters Shop, a memorial garden in the Borough Cemetery was dedicated & the Company, on behalf of its employees was pleased to accept the gracious offer of the Borough Council to maintain the garden in perpetuity”
